Is this the end of the "American Dream"? United States Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that the DV1 program, also known as the United States' green card lottery, will be halted immediately.

The reason for the dramatic pause of the well-known program is the shooting at Brown University, which killed two people on Sunday.

According to a statement from the Secretary of Homeland Security, the shooter, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente,  entered the United States and received a green card through the visa lottery program in 2017. "This heinous individual should never have been allowed in our country." Noem wrote.

"In 2017, President Trump fought to end this program, following the devastating NYC truck ramming by an ISIS terrorist, who entered under the DV1 program, and murdered eight people."

Naum concluded her remarks with a dramatic statement: “At President Trump’s direction, I am immediately directing USCIS to pause the DV1 program to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program.” The Homeland Security Secretary did not say whether there is any intention to renew the program in the future, or whether the halt is permanent.
