The forecast for the first week of January 2026 in Europe heralds extreme weather, wintry, stormy and extremely cold, in significant parts of the continent.

The forecasting authorities of various countries on the continent are reporting that the new week will bring with it an "Arctic cold wave," defined as extremely cold air currents arriving from the north that will cause a dramatic drop in temperatures.

In many parts of the continent, especially in northern and central areas, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing, with a strong chance of heavy snow falling not only in the mountains but also in many areas of central and western Europe. Along with the low temperatures, strong winds of up to 80 km/h are also expected.

In line with the freezing cold wave, aviation authorities in various countries are preparing for airport operations in stormy weather, with disruptions to takeoffs and landings expected due to the difficult conditions.

Minimum temperatures expected this week in several major European cities: Paris -2 degrees at night with snow mixed with rain; Zurich -7, cloudy; London -4 degrees and snow mixed with rain; Brussels -2 degrees, partly cloudy; Amsterdam -1 degrees and snow; Madrid up to -1 and snow; Budapest -3 and snow.
