A tragic train accident occurred on Sunday evening (January 18, 2026), when two passenger trains derailed and collided near the town of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba.
The initial investigation indicates that a high-speed Iryo train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed for an as-yet-unexplained reason, entered the opposite track, and collided with a Renfe train traveling in the opposite direction.
Following the collision, several carriages from both trains derailed, causing severe damage to both the carriages and the railway infrastructure.
According to the latest official update:

- At least 100 passengers were injured, dozens of them in serious condition.
- The injured were evacuated to hospitals in the provinces of Andalusia and Madrid.

The authorities emphasize that the number of victims may change once identification and medical treatment are completed.
Many emergency services were called to the accident scene, including medical rescue services, firefighting units, special rescue units, and the Civil Guard.
The Spanish Rail Infrastructure Manager Adif announced the complete shutdown of key sections of track on the Madrid-Andalusia line, and the operation of alternative transportation arrangements for passengers.
Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente called the incident, which occurred on a straight, renovated section of track, a "very serious and unusual accident" that will require a thorough investigation. Puente added that all avenues of investigation are being examined, including a technical malfunction, infrastructure failure, or human error.
Authorities announced that the official investigation is underway, and that initial findings will be released only after analyzing data from the train and track control systems. Until then, it was reported, no final conclusions should be drawn regarding the circumstances of the accident.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and noted that the government will continue to monitor the event and provide full assistance to the victims and their families.
