Record Rains Paralyze Athens: Emergency Alerts and Flooding in the City

Following emergency alerts sent to their phones, residents of the Greek capital experienced a fully-blown storm with strong winds and over 140 mm of rain falling in a short time, causing flooding throughout the city

Very heavy rainfall was recorded throughout the day yesterday (January 21, 26) across Greece, from the Attica region (where the capital, Athens, is located) to the Peloponnese, Evia, and other parts of the country.

According to official reports, by 8:00 PM, 146.4 mm of rain had been recorded in the Athens area, most of which fell within a few hours. Other areas recorded values of 130 mm and 126 mm.

According to the National Meteorological and Climatic Observatory of Athens, the storm's peak was recorded at 7:30 PM, but most of the rain fell within a few hours across most areas.

Yesterday morning, the authorities sent particularly stressful messages were to the phones of everyone in the Athens area, as well as other areas, warning of the expected storm.

Today in Greece, there will be a temporary pause in the rain until the evening hours, when it is expected to resume, and continue until Friday (January 23, 2026) morning, when the storm will pass.
