The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) reported this week that investigators from the federal government's Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) have boarded Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Encounter cruise ship docked in Darwin Port to investigate reports of alleged worker exposure to skin diseases, unsafe drinking water, and forced labour while sick.
The inspection took place after employees contacted the union, which represents workers in the maritime industry, including merchant ships, cruise ships, dockers, and more.
According to the MUA, "The Carnival Encounter is one of three Carnival Cruise Line vessels “home ported” in Australia which operate almost exclusively in Australian waters but use loopholes in maritime laws to employ vulnerable foreign crew members who are excluded from Australia’s employment laws."
MUA’s NT Branch Secretary, Andy Burford: "This is exactly what happens when you allow foreign-owned and controlled companies to sail the Australian coast, using Australian ports, carrying Australian passengers paying Australian fares, but who are completely immune from Australian law.”
The union reiterated its demand that Carnival recognize the workers' right to unionize. "When workers are not allowed to unionize, that's exactly what happens," the union said in its statement.
The MUA describes its activities in general as follows:
"Our Union is built on solidarity, equality, and social justice. We fight for the rights of every worker, ensuring fair treatment, safe workplaces, and the chance to thrive. Through collective bargaining, advocacy, and active engagement, we work tirelessly to secure better wages, improved conditions, and enhanced job security for our members.
The MUA represents a diverse range of maritime industries. From seafarers and port workers to divers and offshore oil and gas workers, our Union amplifies the voices and champions the interests of individuals in shipping, stevedoring, ferry services, and more. We are united in our mission to promote the welfare of maritime workers and uphold their rights."
