The implementation of new satellite navigation tools, improved precision in takeoffs and landings, and compliance with European regulatory rules are progressing as planned, according to Athens Airport, which expects to complete the project by the end of 2027.
Work on the project, known as "ATHENIAN," (AIA) began in 2023, but Greek airspace shutdown at the beginning of this year emphasized the importance of renewing the systems at the country's main airport.
As mentioned, a significant part of the project is compliance with the 2018 European Union regulation and the European Air Traffic Management Master Plan within the continental framework for managing the Single European Sky and reducing environmental impact.
The project is co-financed by the European Union and coordinated by the Athens Airport Authority, in collaboration with the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, the airlines AEGEAN and SKY Express, and the EUROCONTROL organization.
During the project implementation, joint work is also underway with other bodies, including the Hellenic Air Force, IATA, the Athens Port Airlines Association, RYANAIR, and representatives of other companies.
