Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport suffered disruptions after a JetBlue Airbus A320 made an emergency landing on Wednesday evening.

Flight 543, bound for West Palm Beach, Florida, took off around 5:45 p.m. but had to return about 20 minutes later due to an engine issue and smoke detected in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew evacuated using emergency slides.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, which triggered a temporary ground stop at the airport. Newark flight operations were briefly suspended while the plane was removed from the taxiway.

The airport briefly explained the situation on X: "Flight operations at Newark Liberty are temporarily suspended while an aircraft is removed from the taxiway due to an earlier incident."

Travelers were advised to check with their airlines for updated flight information. As of Thursday morning, flights at Newark have resumed, though delays remain as the airport works to clear the backlog.
