From February 25, 2026, visitors travelling to the UK who do not currently require a visa for a short stay will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

These are citizens of 85 countries worldwide. Visitors who do not hold the required permit or visa will not be able to enter the UK legally.

Please note that those who transit through the UK on connecting flights are also required to obtain the permit, except for those who transit through Heathrow or Manchester airports, and do not pass through UK passport control.

The introduction of electronic travel authorization in the UK will align with the approach of many countries that have taken similar steps to use digital means for border control and security, including the United States.

How and When to Apply, and How Much Does It Cost?

Applying for an ETA is quick, easy, and costs just £16 (approximately $20 or 18 EUR). Most applications receive an automatic response with a decision within just a few minutes, though it is recommended to submit the application at least 3 working days before travel. Those who intend to stay for more than six months are still required to obtain an entry visa. Further details can be found on the official website or in the UK ETA appBe wary of websites selling fake visas.

The permit allows multiple trips to the UK, all for stays of less than six months at a time. The permit is issued for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Visitors must use the same passport as the one they used to apply for their ETA. Holders of dual British or Irish citizenship will not be required to obtain an electronic travel authorisation, but it is highly recommended that they obtain a valid British or Irish passport or a certificate of eligibility in advance to avoid being denied boarding
