Photo: s_bukley / Shutterstock Disney has announced that Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the godparent of the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. The news comes just ahead of the ship’s maiden voyage next month from its home port in Singapore.

Photo: ©Disney“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company.
The actor is best known for his role as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, which helped shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. His portrayal spanned over a decade, culminating in Avengers: Endgame, which earned more than $2.79 billion worldwide. Downey was named an official Disney Legend in 2019 and will next appear as Doctor Doom in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, opening December 18, 2026.
“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest,” Downey said.
The Disney Adventure brings more than a century of Disney storytelling to life with seven themed areas, including several dedicated to Marvel. Marvel Landing, located on the top decks, features Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its kind at sea. Guests can also catch “Avengers Assemble!” in the open-air Disney Imagination Garden, a live stage show packed with stunts and special effects, showcasing Marvel heroes and villains in an action-packed battle. Meanwhile, young guests at Disney’s Oceaneer Club can visit the Marvel WEB Workshop to try on prototype Super Hero suits and take part in interactive Avengers training simulations.
Beyond Marvel adventures, the Disney Adventure also offers signature Disney entertainment, ranging from character encounters and Broadway-style shows to themed staterooms and concierge-level accommodations. The ship also features more than 20 dining and lounge options, offering international and Asian-inspired cuisines and beverages.
Appointing a godparent for a new ship is a centuries-old maritime tradition, meant to bless the vessel before its first journey.
