Starting next year: American Airlines has announced plans to expand Terminal D at Miami International Airport. The project, dubbed D60 and expected to begin in 2027, will include the construction of a new wing with 17 wide-body boarding gates as part of a multi-year plan to upgrade the airport's passenger experience.
The new wing will be built on three floors and will allow for the full operation of large aircraft. Upon completion of the project, external boarding will be eliminated, and the waiting areas will be expanded so that each gate has a designated adjacent area, to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion. The design also includes future preparations for receiving international flights and a direct connection to the airport's passport control floor.

The company accounts for more than 60% of passenger traffic at the airport and serves as a major gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to new routes to Milan and Bimini in the Bahamas.
