Stuck in the Gulf After Flight Disruptions? 5 Free (and Safe) Things to Do This Weekend

Flights across the Middle East and Gulf remain disrupted due to military tensions. If you’re stranded in Doha, Dubai, or nearby cities, here are 5 simple and free things you can still do this weekend

Airspace over much of the Middle East and Gulf is still disrupted because of ongoing military activity, and many flights remain canceled or delayed as a result. UK and other travel advisories warn against all but essential travel to several GCC countries, and many major airports and flights have been suspended or severely limited.

That said, if you’re in a safe city with some mobility and local restrictions allow, you can still make the most of an unexpected weekend. Just be sure to check local government and travel advisories before you head out, and stay flexible, conditions can change quickly.

#1: Take a Walk Along Doha Corniche

Outdoor spaces are often less affected by operational closures and give you a chance to stretch your legs and clear your head without spending much. This is what makes the long waterfront promenade known as the Doha Corniche in Qatar interesting right now. The place offers open‑air space for a stroll, jog, or just fresh air with skyline views. It’s an outdoor public space, so you can enjoy it without buying tickets.

#2: Explore Local Heritage Areas and Markets

Markets and heritage districts are always fun to explore at your own pace, and you can bargain for small souvenirs, snacks, or drinks.

This is also the case for Heart of Sharjah in the UAE, offering historic souq districts and restored heritage areas. These open‑air cultural sites are typically free to wander, though some indoor museums within them may be temporarily closed or limited due to safety advisories.

#3: Beach Time (Where Accessible)

Some public beaches remain accessible even during periods of flight disruption. In Dubai and other coastal cities like Fujairah, public waterfronts and corniche lines are open for fresh air and photo ops. Just avoid gathering in large crowds and stay mindful of any local safety advisories.

Be sure to pack snacks and water from local stores instead of eating at pricey beachfront cafés.

#4: Visit Outdoor Mosque Courtyards

Significant religious sites such as the Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai still stand and are open to visitors for exterior viewing and photos. Interior access can vary with local guidance, so check signage and local advice before entering.

Visiting architecture and peaceful gardens around mosques requires no major tickets and can be a contemplative way to spend part of your day.

#5: Local Cafes and Street Food

Where flight disruptions leave crowds with time to kill, local cafés and street food stalls become social hubs. Look for popular local spots serving shawarma, falafel, fresh juices, and regional sweets. This lets you taste local culture without splurging.

Bonus: Many outdoor cafés in Dubai, Doha or Sharjah have shaded seating and wifi, great for planning your next steps or catching up on emails.

Safety and Local Conditions

Because the regional situation remains fluid, some indoor attractions such as theme parks, malls with large crowds, and entertainment complexes have extended their closures as a precaution. For example, in the UAE, venues like Dubai Parks and Resorts and the Ain Dubai observation wheel were recently confirmed closed through early March for safety reasons.

Be sure to always check official venue channels, government advisories, and local news before heading out. Even if a destination normally operates, temporary closures or early shutdowns can happen on short notice.
