In Protest Against Planned Reform: Taxi Drivers in Greece Launch Prolonged Strike

Unlike previous strikes, it is unclear whether the strike will last three days or longer. The drivers have also begun a series of protest measures including demonstrations and marches in front of the parliament in Athens

The Greek Taxi Association has announced the start of strikes and protest measures beginning today (March 17, 2026). Unlike the many previous strikes in the industry, this time the strike was not limited to clear times, but was announced to last "for the entire period of discussions on the new bill in parliament."

The bill deals with reforming the industry and includes a series of changes that would affect its activities, including expanding car rental companies' activities, alongside stricter routine enforcement and rating drivers, as is customary in apps, using a QR code placed in taxis.

The protest will include a series of protest measures, including rallies by the taxi union and a protest march in central Athens.

Taxi Transfers Viennas apologized for the inconvenience caused by the strike and said: "We call on all drivers to participate fully and resolutely in the protest measures. We will no longer accept hostile policies and indifference. We apologize to the traveling public for the inconvenience, but our struggle concerns all of society. We are fighting for safe, high-quality and equitable public transportation."
