The heads of the taxi drivers' union of the Attica region, which hosts Athens, the capital of Greece, decided yesterday (February 16, 2026) by a majority vote to tighten their measures and launch a significant strike starting today, Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

From 6:00 AM on Friday, February 20, through 6:00 AM, there will be no taxi service throughout the districtincluding Athens. Public transportation, including the metro, will operate as usual. Regarding taxis, it should be noted that Uber and FreeNow taxi drivers in Athens are covered by the drivers' agreements, so they will also mostly go on strike.

Originally, the strike was scheduled to begin tomorrow, February 18, but as mentioned, the drivers decided to start one day earlier.

The drivers are further threatening to intensify their actions and extend the strike to all trips indefinitely if the authorities do not meet their demands regarding work conditions.

Tourists should also know that, in addition to the strike, protest marches and demonstrations will be held throughout Athens in the coming days.

Medical emergencies will be answered by drivers at designated service centers.
