Disaster Averted at Newark Airport: Controller Prevents Runway Collision at the Last Minute

An Alaska Airlines flight was approaching to land while a FedEx plane was landing on an intersecting runway. Thanks to the alertness of the tower controller, a major disaster was averted

Unusual incident at Newark International Airport in New Jersey. The Federal Aviation Administration has offered an update on a serious incident that occurred at the airport on Tuesday, March 17.

According to the FAA, a traffic controller at the control tower instructed Alaska Airlines Flight 294 to make a go-around before landing.

The reason was that FedEx Flight 721 was cleared to land on an intersecting runway, which could have resulted in a collision. Thanks to the controller's vigilance, a major disaster may well have been averted.

The FAA said it was investigating the incident.
