Light, Spacious and Fuel-Saving: Airline Reveals Next Generation of Airplane Seats

Airlines continue their efforts to reduce emissions and save fuel, both due to the need to adjust towards the "zero emissions" plan in 2050 and the fuel crisis, which is also driving a significant increase in jet fuel prices.

The British low-cost airline easyJet announced today (March 24, 2026) a move to upgrade the flight experience and streamline operations, which will include implementing ultra-light "next-generation" seats in its new aircraft starting in 2028, according to the company's announcement.

The new seats, the "Kestrel" model from British manufacturer Mirus Aircraft Seating, are expected to be more than 20% lighter than current seats and allow for up to two inches of additional legroom for passengers. The seats will be installed on Airbus A320neo and Airbus A321neo aircraft.

According to the company, the weight reduction will lead to savings of up to 500 kg per aircraft in the larger models and will contribute to annual fuel savings of approximately 12,936 tons, equivalent to over 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The seats have been specially designed for short- and medium-haul flights, improving passenger comfort through an ergonomic structure and a forward-tilted seating position that increases legroom without changing the aircraft's row spacing.

The new model also emphasizes sustainability: it includes fewer parts, requires reduced maintenance, and reaches approximately 98% recyclability at the end of its life. The development and testing process, carried out at a dedicated facility in the UK, is also designed to reduce costs and emissions associated with transportation and external certification.

According to the company, the move joins a series of steps easyJet is taking to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact, including expanding the NEO aircraft fleet and other technological upgrades.
