United Airlines, which announced a series of innovations to its aircraft fleet just yesterday, continues to surprise. Last night, the company announced plans to launch a new product in the economy class, United Relax Row.
The dedicated row of seats can be transformed into a sofa during long-haul flights. The product is expected to enter service starting next year on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft by 2030.
The new row of three seats in the aforementioned economy class includes adjustable backrests that can be lifted at a 90-degree angle, so that a wider surface can be created for lying down, resting, or watching a screen. The row is intended primarily for families with children, couples, and single passengers who want increased comfort without upgrading to a more expensive class.
Passengers who choose the new product will receive an expanded comfort kit that includes a customized mattress, a large blanket, additional pillows, and a children's kit that includes a toy and dedicated flight equipment. The seats will be located between regular economy and premium class, with up to 12 such rows on each aircraft.
This is not the first time this product has been in the air. More than a decade ago, Air New Zealand introduced a similar product on its planes, and just as United is rumored to be doing, it also involved special seats in the economy class of the company's wide-body aircraft. According to past publications, the product was also very successful among families.
