The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Kenya, warning of increased security risks in areas next to the border with Somalia and along parts of the country’s eastern coastline.

Due to the threat of terrorism linked to groups operating from Somalia, the FCDO is advising against all travel to several regions. These include Mandera County, as well as the Tarbaj and Wajir East constituencies in Wajir County, with the exception of Wajir Town. The warning also applies to areas of Wajir County located within 60 kilometers of Kenya’s border with Somalia.

Garissa County is also included in the advisory, although some areas are exempt. Travel is still permitted to Garissa Town, the constituency of Lagdera, and parts of Balambala constituency located north and west of the main road running from Saka on the Tana River to the intersection with the C81 road.

In Lamu County, the FCDO advises against all travel except to Lamu Island and Manda Island.

A separate warning is in place for areas where only essential travel is recommended. These include Garissa Town and parts of Tana River County north of the Tana River up to the town of Saka. Additional restrictions apply to areas within 15 kilometers of the east coast between the Tana River and the Galana, also known as the Athi-Galana-Sabaki River.

The FCDO emphasizes that no destination can be considered completely risk-free, urging travelers to review official guidance carefully before planning trips.
