Particularly heavy rains are expected starting April 1, 2026, and into the next three days in Greece. According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, the country will be hit by a significant storm that will bring winds, thunder and lightning, and even hail just ahead of Easter, with large crowds from around the world having already arrived to spend the holiday in Athens and on the islands.
Authorities have warned residents and tourists to be prepared for severe thunderstorms, protect themselves from lightning, and expect possible property damage, as well as flash flooding, wind gusts, and hail. Officials have also issued a warning regarding potential disruptions to transportation and outdoor activities.
The main wave of the storm will hit several areas within the next 24 hours, including central Attica, where Athens is located, with 60 mm of rain expected within a few hours. A storm is also expected in several other areas, including Rhodes and the nearby islands, and the Peloponnese.
The Greek authorities added that "you should exercise extreme caution, protect yourself and follow the instructions from the authorities. There may be widespread flooding of buildings with a significant risk of life and various injuries. There is a likelihood of serious traffic disruptions and power, communication and water outages. Driving conditions will be dangerous due to reduced visibility."
As we reported earlier this year, during the significant storm that hit the Athens area in January, alerts were activated on the phones of all residents and tourists in the city.
