Low-cost airline Wizz Air continues to strengthen its position on the European market with the opening of a new base at Podgorica Airport in Montenegro. The move marks an operational expansion for the company, as well as a strategic bet on one of Europe's developing destinations.
The new base, which opened at the beginning of April, will support the launch of 17 routes to major European destinations, with the first routes gradually introduced by mid-June. This is a relatively large-scale move for a market like Montenegro, which places the country, and especially Podgorica, on the European aviation map more significantly than ever before.
Podgorica: Small Airport with Big Ambitions
Podgorica Airport, the political and economic capital of Montenegro, has, until now, been considered a relatively secondary airport, especially compared to Tivat, which primarily serves beach tourism. However, in recent years, there has been a clear trend towards developing infrastructure, expanding routes, and attracting low-cost activity to balance the country's sharp seasonality.
Wizz Air's move fits right into this trend: strengthening connectivity year-round, not just in the summer season. Podgorica could, in this way, become a "local" airport into a regional gateway serving tourism, business, and intra-European passenger traffic.
Montenegro on the European Radar
Montenegro has enjoyed a steady increase in demand in recent years from European tourists looking for a cheaper, less crowded alternative to destinations like Croatia or Greece. The combination of Adriatic coast, mountainous nature, relatively affordable prices, and improving accessibility makes it a rapidly growing destination.
The increase in flight supply by low-cost carriers is one of the key factors driving this trend. The entry of a significant player like Wizz Air on such a scale is expected to further accelerate the flow of tourists and establish the country as a competitive destination in the European market.
For Wizz Air, this is a move that continues a clear strategy of expansion in emerging markets and destinations with high growth potential. In recent years, the company has been building an extensive network of bases in Eastern and Southern Europe, taking advantage of low operating costs and rising demand.
The base in Podgorica joins the moves that strengthen the company's presence in the Balkans and Adriatic Sea region, and position it as a major player in the European low-cost market.
