Residents of eastern Crete woke up to a powerful earthquake this morning, April 24, 2026. The 5.8 magnitude quake struck at around 6:15 AM (GMT+3) local time.

The epicenter was at sea, southeast of the island, only 11 kilometers from land and the Ierapetra area. Due to the earthquake's significant intensity, reports in Greece say it was felt throughout the eastern Lassithi region and, according to the Hellenic Survey for Geology and Mining Research, even as far away as Heraklion. However, no casualties or significant damage were reported.

Greece is no stranger to earthquakes, especially on the islands. Last year, a series of earthquakes hit the Santorini area, causing a hit to tourism on the island.
