Photo: Oryzapratama / Shutterstock Rescue teams on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, completed the recovery operation at the site of a deadly train crash near Indonesia’s capital, confirming that 15 people were killed. All of the victims were women.
Representatives also informed of the safe evacuation of a victim: "At 04:17 Westen Indonesian Time (09:17 GMT), Basarnas personnel along with the joint SAR team, led directly by the Head of Basarnas, successfully evacuated 1 victim in a safe condition, named Nurul (26 years/F), and immediately transported to Bekasi City Hospital."
The accident took place on Monday, April 27, at Bekasi Timur Station, just outside Jakarta, when a long-distance train struck the rear carriage of a stationary commuter train. The impacted carriage had been designated for women only, a measure commonly used to reduce harassment on public transport.
Authorities said 88 injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Bobby Rasyidin, CEO of the state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia, confirmed that the bodies of those killed have been transferred for identification.
“We are currently ensuring that all victims receive the best possible care,” said Rasyidin.
Rescue crews worked through the wreckage overnight and into Tuesday morning to locate and evacuate those trapped inside the damaged carriage. By midmorning, officials confirmed that the operation had concluded.
“There are no further casualties,” said Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is expected to follow.
