Panamanian airline Copa Airlines has announced a significant order for 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, along with an option to purchase up to 20 additional aircraft from the same family.

The official announcement was signed at a ceremony in Panama, attended by the company's CEO Pedro Heilbron, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Stephanie Pope, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, and other representatives from the US and Panamanian governments.

The new order will allow the airline to expand its fleet by more than 100 737 MAX aircraft, along with existing orders, and strengthen its operations from its “Hub of the Americas” in Panama. The move is expected to support the expansion of routes to popular destinations throughout North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.

The company's CEO, Pedro Heilbronn, noted that this is a strategic step to strengthen connectivity and operations: "The addition of new aircraft will be key to continuing to expand our operations and route network, while supporting the economic development of Panama and the region, generating new jobs and growth in the tourism sector."

Copa Airlines currently operates a fleet of over 110 Boeing 737 aircraft, including previous and new generations, enabling operational uniformity and high efficiency. The 737-8 and 737-9 aircraft, part of the MAX family, allow the company to operate both short-haul flights with high occupancy rates and relatively long routes for a narrow-body aircraft.

Boeing emphasized that the order continues a partnership of more than 40 years between the companies, and will help Copa maintain one of the youngest and most advanced aircraft fleets in the world.

The company currently connects 88 destinations in 32 countries across the Americas and the Caribbean. According to Boeing’s market forecasts, the region will need more than 2,300 new aircraft over the next 20 years, with narrow-body aircraft like the 737 MAX expected to account for about 90% of deliveries.
