The European Union has introduced new Schengen visa facilitations for Thai nationals living in Thailand, marking another step forward in relations between Europe and the Southeast Asian nation.

How the New "Visa Cascade" System Works

According to the newly adopted “visa cascade” system, Thai travelers with a strong travel history and no record of overstaying may now qualify for increasingly longer multiple-entry Schengen visas.

The new rules apply to Thai nationals residing in Thailand who apply for short-stay Schengen visas through embassies or consulates representing Schengen member states in the country.

According to the updated framework, travelers who have obtained and lawfully used a Schengen visa during the previous two years may now qualify for a one-year multiple-entry visa. Those who continue traveling responsibly may later become eligible for visas valid for two years and eventually up to five years.

The change is expected to make travel to Europe significantly easier for frequent Thai visitors, reducing the need for repeated visa applications while strengthening tourism, business travel, educational exchanges, and cultural connections.

Officials said the move reflects the growing momentum in cooperation between the EU and Thailand under their Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

A Schengen visa allows travelers to move freely across the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. While the visa does not allow holders to work in Europe, it permits tourism, family visits, business travel, and other short-term activities.

The Schengen area currently includes 29 European countries, among them France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Switzerland.

The visa facilitations are likely to be welcomed by Thailand’s growing number of outbound travelers, particularly those who frequently visit Europe for tourism and business.

Travel industry observers also see the decision as part of a broader effort by European authorities to strengthen ties with Asian markets as international travel demand continues to rise strongly in 2026.
