German low-cost carrier Eurowings has announced a significant expansion of its base at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, adding two new aircraft and increasing its local fleet to 11 for the upcoming winter season.
According to the company's announcement, Eurowings will increase its operations in Berlin to more than 300 staff members and operate almost 50 direct destinations from the German capital. As part of the expansion, a new flight to the city of Bologna in Italy will also be launched, alongside a significant increase in flights to the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, Gran Canaria and more.
The Lufthansa Group emphasizes that the move strengthens its position as the largest airline group in Berlin, with a share of about 30% of all flights at the local airport. Alongside Eurowings, Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Austrian Airlines, and SunExpress also operate in Berlin.
Eurowings CEO Max Kownatzki said that the company sees significant potential in the Berlin market, but warned that the costs of taxation and fees in Germany, along with strict European regulation, make it difficult for airlines to continue investing in the German market.
