Travelers heading to Milan Malpensa Airport and other airport areas around Milan this weekend are being advised to allow extra travel time due to major road closures linked to the arrival of the Giro d'Italia 2026 (Tour of Italy )in the city.
Airport officials warned passengers that significant traffic disruptions are expected on Sunday, May 24, as Milan hosts the 15th stage of the famous cycling race, known as the Corsa Rosa.
The stage will begin in Voghera at around 1:40 p.m. before riders enter Milan later in the afternoon, with the finish line located on Corso Venezia at approximately 5:00 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of the race.
This year marks the 90th time a Giro d’Italia stage has finished in Milan, underlining the city’s historic connection to the event, which first began there in 1909.
Authorities confirmed that roads along the race circuit will begin closing from 11:30 a.m. on Sunday and are expected to remain inaccessible until around 6:00 p.m. During that period, vehicles will not be permitted to cross or travel along the race route.
Additional restrictions will begin earlier, with parking bans taking effect from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. Officials warned that vehicles left in restricted areas will be removed.
Large sections of Milan’s road network will be affected, including major streets and intersections around Corso Buenos Aires, Piazzale Loreto, Corso Venezia, Viale Toscana, Piazzale Lodi, Viale Umbria, and several central districts.
Public transportation services will also face diversions and route changes throughout the day as the race passes through the city.
Airport authorities are encouraging travelers to use public transport where possible and to leave for the airport well in advance, especially during peak afternoon hours when race-related congestion is expected to intensify.
The Giro d’Italia is one of the world’s most prestigious cycling events and regularly attracts large crowds and significant traffic disruptions in host cities across Italy.
