"Today, Europe Grieves with Belgium": Train and School Bus Crash Shocks Country

Belgian authorities declared an emergency phase after a tragic train and school bus crash in Buggenhout, which prompted reactions from top officials

Buggenhout-Lebbeke police officials have issued a statement regarding a "serious traffic accident" that occurred in Buggenhout, Belgium, today, May 26, 2026, at approximately 8:00 a.m. local time.

Authorities also say that the municipal emergency phase has been declared, which is necessary when the impact or the threat of an incident is restricted to the municipality's border. 

"The mayor is coordinating the response together with members of the various emergency and public safety services," the police added.

Authorities are expected to issue an official press briefing later today.

Usula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has shared a heartfelt message on social media addressing the "tragic accident between a train and a school bus in Buggenhout". 

"My deepest condolences go out to the victims’ families and their loved ones. Today, Europe grieves with Belgium," she said.

Bernard Quintin, Belgium's Minister of Security and the Interior, has shared a similarly moving message expressing sadness for the "tragic accident that occurred in Buggenhout."

"My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. I wish much courage to the injured. I thank our emergency services for their swift intervention on site."

In a similar message, Zuhal Demir, the Flemish Minister of Education, Justice and Employment, commented on the "heartbreaking news from Buggenhout", saying her thoughts are "with all the victims, their families, and everyone closely involved."

"Much strength to everyone affected by this. Thanks to the emergency services for their efforts on site," she added.
