New Jersey's statewide transit provider, NJ TRANSIT, which offers bus, rail, and light rail services, announced today, May 26, 2026, a suspension of rail service due to a bridge malfunction.

"Rail service on Morris and Essex, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line is suspended in both directions due to the Newark Draw Bridge being stuck in the open position," said the operator in a social media post at 11:25 AM local time (15:25 PM GMT).

NJ TRANSIT rail passengers were informed that their tickets and passes would be cross-honored by the company's bus and private carriers as well as PATH at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street-NY.

As of 11:52 AM local time (15:52 PM GMT), the company has resumed service on the Morris and Essex, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line rail in both directions.

However, traffic is still subject to up to 30-minute delays due to the event involving the bridge.

At the same time, NJ TRANSIT informs that River Line service has also resumed "in both directions between Walter Rand Transportation Center and 36th Street Station and is subject to up to 15-minute delays northbound" because of an earlier Conrail derailment near 36th Street Station, also announced by the operator on social media.

For alternative service options, passengers are advised to visit NJ TRANSIT's dedicated page.
