Commuters traveling between New Jersey and New York are facing significant rail disruptions as repair work continues following infrastructure damage caused by an Amtrak track fire in one of the Hudson River Tunnels.

NJ TRANSIT announced on Monday morning, June 1, 2026, that rail services into and out of Penn Station New York are subject to delays of up to 60 minutes while crews continue repairs to damaged overhead wires and related infrastructure.

According to the agency, the ongoing work stems from an Amtrak track fire that occurred on May 29 inside one of the critical tunnels connecting New Jersey and Manhattan.

As a result of the disruption, Midtown Direct trains are being diverted to Hoboken Terminal rather than operating into Penn Station New York.

To help passengers complete their journeys, NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes are being accepted on alternative transportation services. The agency said cross-honoring arrangements are in place on NJ TRANSIT buses, private carrier buses, and PATH services at Hoboken, Newark Penn Station, and 33rd Street in Manhattan.

The Hudson River Tunnels are among the busiest rail corridors in the United States, carrying thousands of daily commuters between New Jersey and New York City. Any disruption within the tunnels can quickly ripple across the regional transportation network, affecting both commuter and intercity rail services.

Passengers are being encouraged to check the latest service updates and consider alternate travel options before departing. NJ TRANSIT has directed customers to its online service information page for details on available alternatives and current operating conditions.
