NJ TRANSIT warned passengers of major rail delays on Thursday after what officials described as a "trespasser fatality" near Elizabeth.
According to NJ TRANSIT's announcement at approximately 09:00 PM (May 28), Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line services are experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes into and out of Penn Station.
“Due to an earlier trespasser fatality near Elizabeth, NJ TRANSIT Northeast Corridor & North Jersey Coast Line rail service is subject to up to 30-minute delays into & out Penn Station NY,” the agency said in a service alert.
NJ Transit also confirmed that rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored on NJ Transit buses and private carrier bus services to help accommodate stranded passengers.
Officials have not yet released additional details regarding the fatal incident.
Earlier this week, NJ TRANSIT faced major disruptions after the Newark Draw Bridge malfunctioned and a separate Conrail derailment affected River Line service. Last week, NJ TRANSIT services were suspended into and out of Penn Station after a brush fire broke out near one of the Hudson River tunnels.
On May 14, 2026, service at Penn Station was suspended "following a fire near the terminal," causing major disruption for thousands of commuters across New York City.
