Tropical cyclone Jangmi is moving north toward mainland Japan after passing the Okinawa Islands, with both the French and the American embassies in Japan warning nationals of severe weather conditions expected to affect large parts of the country, including the Tokyo metropolitan area.
The system, that follows the sixth typhoon to hit the country this year, is currently over Kyushu and is forecast to track along the Pacific coast of Honshu on June 3, 2026, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and dangerous sea conditions. Meteorological data indicates wind speeds could exceed 120 km/h, with wave heights reaching between 6 and 10 metres.

According to forecasts, Jangmi is expected to reach the wider Tokyo area by late morning, potentially disrupting transport networks, including rail and air services. Local authorities are also considering temporary school closures depending on the storm’s progression.
The cyclone’s impact is expected to be felt across multiple prefectures as it continues its northward path, with emergency services on alert for flooding, coastal surges and infrastructure disruption.
Authorities are urging residents and travellers to exercise extreme caution, avoid coastal areas, mountains and beaches, and remain indoors where possible while the system passes.
French nationals in Japan have also been advised to follow local safety instructions closely and stay updated through official channels, including the Japan Meteorological Agency.
"Operations at the U.S. Embassy Tokyo Consular Section may be disrupted due to severe weather conditions. If you have an American Citizen Services or visa appointment, please check the Embassy website for the latest operating status before traveling: https://jp.usembassy.gov," said embassy's latest announcement.
