Passengers traveling through Mexico City's Benito Juárez International Airport faced access disruptions on Tuesday, June 2, after protesters blocked a key roadway leading to Terminal 1, while airport authorities also responded to a separate incident involving part of a pedestrian bridge structure.
Terminal 1 Access, Blocked
The first disruption occurred when airport officials reported a closure on the Circuito Interior roadway, just meters from the entrance to Terminal 1.
"Closure reported on the Circuito Interior, just meters before the entrance to Terminal 1, due to the presence of protesters," the airport said in an advisory.
"Passengers with flights departing from this terminal are advised to take alternative routes and check with their airline regarding the status of their flights."
As traffic congestion worsened around the terminal, airport authorities implemented temporary measures to assist travelers trying to reach their flights.
"Due to road difficulties, we are supporting passengers with AICM vehicles for access to Terminal 1," the airport later announced.
Roof Detaches from Pedestrian VBridge, Falls on Car
While access issues continued, airport officials reported a separate incident on Captain Carlos León Avenue involving airport infrastructure near one of the vehicle exits from Terminal 1.
"A few moments ago, on Captain Carlos León Avenue, at one of the vehicular exits from Terminal 1, a roof installed on one of the pedestrian bridges became detached from it," the airport said.
According to the airport, the detached structure struck a motorist.
"Damage occurred to a motorist, who was affected as a result of the aforementioned incident."
Airport authorities said emergency responders acted immediately following the accident.
"It should be noted that the airport's medical service intervened immediately to address the emergency."
Officials added that an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the incident and any potential liability.
"The corresponding investigation will be conducted in order to determine the relevant responsibilities, and the insurance coverage will address any damages that may have been caused."
Local deputy in the Mexico City Congress América Rangel took it to social media to express frustration regarding the incident: "Structure collapses at Mexico City International Airport... A renovation that Sheinbaum inaugurated just this Saturday. Everything, absolutely everything Morena does is wrong. It's unbelievable."
At 09:00 PM local time, June 2 (03:00 AM GMT June 3), airport authorities confirmed that access conditions had improved and that roads leading to Terminal 1 had reopened.
While road access has been restored, passengers are still being advised to verify flight information directly with their carriers as airport operations continue to normalize.
