Today, May 28, 2026, Global Affairs Canada issued a trilateral statement signed by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, announcing "harmonized public health measures for travelers from African regions most affected by the Ebola virus."
The coordinated approach, explains the brief statement, is aimed at protecting citizens as well as the millions of expected visitors, football fans, players, and tourists during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup".
The joint statement is also looking to preserve trade as well as cross-border travel.
"The health and safety of everyone in the region remains our top priority as we welcome the world to North America,” concluded the announcement.
The World Cup 2026 will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, marking the first men's tournament to be co-hosted by three nations. Matches will be spread across two Canadian cities (Toronto, Vancouver), three Mexican cities (Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey), and 11 cities in the US (Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle).
As of May 21, 2026, all US-bound American citizens and lawful permanent residents who have been traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within 21 days before entering the United States must now arrive only through Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
