A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of the Pacific Northwest early Wednesday morning, prompting the activation of the United States' ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system for parts of Northern California and Southern Oregon.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at approximately 3:53 a.m. local time and was centered about 100 miles southwest of Pistol River, Oregon.
The ShakeAlert system issued warnings to residents across portions of the Redwood Coast region of California and Southern Oregon, providing advance notice before shaking was felt in some areas.
USGS ShakeAlert directed the public to official earthquake information and monitoring resources while emergency management partners across California and Oregon continued to assess conditions.
No immediate reports of significant damage or injuries were released following the earthquake.
The USGS later acknowledged that earthquakes can be unsettling for residents and emphasized that monitoring teams remain available around the clock.
"We know that feeling the ground shake can be unsettling. The USGS earthquakes team is here with you 24/7 getting information out so you can stay safe," the agency said.
Officials also encouraged residents to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety procedures and emergency preparedness guidance provided through the ShakeAlert program.
The ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system operates across California, Oregon, and Washington, using a network of seismic sensors to detect earthquakes and provide warnings before shaking reaches populated areas. Depending on distance from the epicenter, alerts can provide users with several seconds to take protective action before strong shaking begins.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, while residents are advised to follow updates from the USGS and local emergency management agencies.
