Heathrow Airport is celebrating a major milestone in 2026, marking 80 years since it welcomed its first commercial passengers in 1946.

The airport, now one of the world's leading international gateways, has launched a series of events and activities to commemorate eight decades of connecting travelers from across the globe.

Throughout June, July, and August, passengers can enjoy live performances as part of the Heathrow Sounds program, featuring musicians performing across the airport's terminals. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore Heathrow's history through virtual reality experiences that recreate what the airport looked like during its early years.

One of the more unusual anniversary tributes comes from bestselling poet David Larbi, who has created a special poem that can only be viewed from the air. The artwork has been etched into a nearby field and is visible to passengers during takeoff and landing.

The celebrations also include prize draws featuring 80 giveaways, ranging from travel accessories to luxury experiences. One of the top prizes is a pair of round-the-world tickets offered in partnership with Star Alliance and Heathrow Rewards.

The anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on Heathrow's remarkable transformation since its opening in 1946. Known at the time as London Airport, its first commercial flight was operated by a converted Lancaster bomber named Starlight, which departed for Buenos Aires.

In its earliest days, passengers checked in through former Royal Air Force marquees set up along Bath Road, far removed from the sprawling global hub that serves millions of travelers today.

Heathrow has also published a retrospective highlighting some of the airport's most significant moments, from the opening of new terminals to major international events that have shaped its development over the decades.

As Heathrow celebrates its 80th birthday, the airport is looking not only at its past but also at its future as it continues to expand its role as the United Kingdom's primary gateway to the world.
