Police in South Africa have launched a large-scale manhunt after a mass shooting at an informal settlement in Gauteng Province left 12 people dead and several others wounded.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to reports of an active shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland at approximately 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
When police arrived, they discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical teams were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured.
Preliminary investigations indicate that 12 people were killed in the attack. SAPS said eight adult men and three adult women were declared dead at the scene, while a fourth male victim later died in hospital from his injuries.
At least nine other people were transported to medical facilities for treatment.
Police said it is alleged that more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum before entering the settlement through different access points.
"The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle," SAPS said.
Investigators from provincial and district detective units, supported by crime intelligence and forensic specialists, have been assigned to the case.
"The motive for the attack is currently unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage," police added.
Authorities have appealed for information from the public as efforts continue to identify and locate those responsible for one of the deadliest shootings reported in the area in recent years.
