Travelers departing Thailand's busiest holiday island are set to benefit from faster immigration processing as Phuket International Airport introduces automated passport control lanes.

The new automated departure gates will officially begin operating on June 13, 2026, as part of efforts to address concerns about congestion and long wait times at immigration checkpoints.

According to the Thai Government Public Relations Department, the system is designed to streamline passenger processing, reduce queues, and enhance the overall travel experience for both domestic and international visitors.

The move comes as Phuket continues to welcome large numbers of international tourists, placing increased pressure on airport infrastructure during peak travel periods.

"No Fees to Skip the Line!"

Officials also sought to clarify reports circulating online regarding paid fast-track services.

"And to be clear: there are no fees to skip the line," the airport emphasized, noting that travelers will not be charged for access to the new automated lanes.

The introduction of automated immigration technology aligns with broader efforts across Asia to modernize border control procedures and improve airport efficiency through digital solutions.

How the New System Works

To use the new automated passport gates, passengers must hold a biometric electronic passport (e-Passport). The system is not available to travelers who are under 120 centimeters tall, carrying oversized baggage exceeding 120 centimeters, or pregnant.

Before entering the automated lane, passengers should remove face masks, hats, and glasses to allow the facial-recognition system to operate correctly. Passports should be in good condition, free of covers or protective sleeves, and placed on the reader one at a time without any additional items attached. Travelers must also ensure their passport has at least six months (180 days) of remaining validity.

Those who do not meet the eligibility requirements or encounter difficulties using the automated gates can complete immigration clearance at the regular staffed counters.

Meanwhile, part of Phuket International Airport's international arrivals immigration area will remain temporarily closed until July 9, 2026, as work continues on the installation of the Automatic Border Control (ABC) system. Airport officials said the upgrades will not affect flight operations but advised travelers to allow extra time for immigration procedures, follow airport signage, and monitor official airport channels for updates.

For passengers traveling through Phuket this summer, the new system promises a smoother departure experience and less time spent waiting in line before boarding their flights.
