Air travelers passing through the New York metropolitan area this summer are being urged to plan ahead as FIFA World Cup matches are expected to place significant pressure on airports, roads, and public transportation networks.
Both John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport have issued advisories warning passengers of increased congestion on key match days as the United States hosts the largest FIFA World Cup tournament ever staged.
Newark Airport announced that temporary rail service adjustments by NJ Transit will take effect on June 13, 2026, due to a World Cup match, affecting travel between Newark Airport, New York City, and several destinations across New Jersey.

Airport officials advised travelers to allow extra time for their journeys even if they are not attending a match, noting that peak passenger volumes will impact transportation throughout both New York and New Jersey.
The warnings come as millions of football fans are expected to travel across North America during the tournament, with the New York-New Jersey region hosting several high-profile matches, including knockout-stage fixtures.
Passengers are encouraged to monitor transportation updates, check rail and transit schedules before traveling, and sign up for airport alerts where available. Officials also recommend arriving at airports earlier than usual to account for potential delays caused by increased traffic and crowded transportation hubs.
With airports, rail operators, and transportation agencies coordinating closely throughout the tournament, authorities hope early planning by travelers will help minimize disruption during one of the busiest travel periods the region has ever experienced.
