SKY express has blamed a last-minute inspection of critical airport navigation equipment for the widespread delays that disrupted flights at Athens International Airport on June 10 and 11.
In a statement, the Greek airline said the delays affecting arrivals and departures at Athens Airport were linked to an inspection ordered by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA). According to SKY express, airlines were informed only on June 9 that checks would be carried out on the airport's approach systems, including the Instrument Landing System (ILS), which helps aircraft land safely, particularly in poor visibility.
"Throughout those two days, SKY express made every possible effort to limit the inconvenience to its passengers, immediately activating the full range of its operational support and customer service procedures. The company’s teams at the airport and at its operations centre worked intensively to keep passengers informed in good time and to provide them with the best possible service.," said the airline in its statement.
SKY express strongly criticized the timing of the inspection, arguing that work of this scale should not have been scheduled during one of the busiest periods of the year.
The company said the inspection could have been carried out months earlier or during overnight hours, minimizing the impact on passengers and airport operations. It also argued that the short notice given to airlines left carriers with little opportunity to adjust schedules or prepare alternative arrangements.
According to SKY express, the disruption affected not only passengers but also airline staff, air traffic controllers, civil aviation personnel, and the overall operation of Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos."
The airline has called for greater accountability and urged authorities to ensure that any future actions likely to affect airport operations are communicated well in advance. It also requested clearer impact assessments and improved coordination with airlines to help protect passengers and maintain Greece's reputation as a leading international tourism destination.
SKY express concluded by thanking passengers for their patience and understanding during the disruption.
