One for the books: The New York Knicks are the 2026 NBA Champions, defeating San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA finals on Saturday night, June 13, 2026.
This historic victory ends a 53-year title drought, bringing the Larry O'Brien Trophy back to New York for the first time since 1973.
The victory, as expected, set the scene for massive celebrations in the streets. The head of the New York City Police Department praised officers for their work during citywide celebrations following the Knicks' victory, while acknowledging that police also had to respond to incidents of violence involving a small number of revelers.
In a statement released after the celebrations, the Police Commissioner said officers were deployed across all five boroughs as large crowds gathered to mark the Knicks' title win.
According to the commissioner, most fans celebrated peacefully, but police were required to deal with what was described as a "relatively small number" of individuals who used the occasion as an excuse to engage in violent behavior.
The commissioner highlighted the demanding conditions faced by officers throughout the night, noting that many worked extended shifts, while others reported for duty on their scheduled days off to help manage the large crowds.
The policing effort did not end with the championship celebrations. The commissioner said many officers moved directly from overnight assignments into security operations for Sunday's Puerto Rican Day Parade and FIFA watch parties held across the city.
"To every cop who put themselves at risk to ensure others could celebrate safely: thank you for your noble service," the commissioner said.
The statement concluded with a message of appreciation for law enforcement personnel, adding that New York City is grateful for their efforts.
The commissioner's comments come as New York prepares for another major celebration. Following the team's championship victory, the Knicks are set to hold a parade on Thursday, June 18, through Lower Manhattan's Canyon of Heroes.
The event is expected to draw massive crowds, with city officials anticipating tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of fans lining the streets to celebrate the franchise's title. The parade will likely require another large-scale security operation by the NYPD.
