Edinburgh Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United Kingdom that handles millions of passengers each year, has warned passengers to expect heavier traffic than usual this week as thousands of visitors travel to Ingliston for the Royal Highland Show, taking place from June 19 to June 22.

Airport officials say roads around the site are likely to become busy as the major agricultural event coincides with the peak summer travel season. The combination is expected to place additional pressure on local routes, particularly in the west of Edinburgh.
The A8 Glasgow Road is expected to see the most significant delays, with drivers advised to allow extra time when traveling to or from the airport. Traffic build-up is also expected in the days leading up to the event, not just during the four-day show itself.
Passengers flying through Edinburgh Airport are being encouraged to plan ahead and consider using public transport where possible. The airport is well connected by both tram and bus services, which officials say may offer a faster and more reliable option during busy periods.
For those traveling by car, the airport operates multiple parking facilities, along with both paid and free pick-up and drop-off zones. However, with increased demand expected, congestion in these areas may also rise during peak hours.
Airport officials are also reminding passengers to arrive at their check-in desks at the correct time and to be prepared for security screening to help avoid delays. Travelers are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with security rules in advance to ensure a smoother journey through the terminal.
Traffic updates for the wider region can be followed through Transport Scotland channels, with drivers urged to check conditions before setting off.
How to Get to the Royal Highland Show by Public Transportation
Getting to the Royal Highland Show is straightforward thanks to dedicated public transport services running from Edinburgh throughout the event.
Lothian Buses will operate two special services, the 97 and 98 Show buses, which run directly from George Street in central Edinburgh to the East Entrance of the Royal Highland Show. These services provide a direct and convenient option for visitors heading straight to the event.
For those traveling by tram, Edinburgh Trams offer frequent services from Leith through the city center to Ingliston Park and Ride. From there, visitors can take a short shuttle bus directly to the East Entrance of the showground. Trams run approximately every seven minutes, making it one of the most regular and reliable travel options during the event.
