A runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport was temporarily closed on Wednesday evening, June 17, 20206, after airport officials discovered a small surface depression during a routine airfield inspection.
According to airport authorities, an approximately two-inch depression was identified adjacent to Runway 4/22. While officials stressed there is "no immediate safety concern," the runway was closed proactively from 5 p.m. local time to allow crews to conduct further testing, determine the cause of the issue, and carry out any necessary stabilization work.
Airport operators said flight operations will continue using Runway 13/31 while the assessment is underway.
Officials expect the inspection and any required repairs to be completed overnight, with the goal of returning Runway 4/22 to service on Thursday morning, June 18, if conditions allow.
Passengers traveling through LaGuardia have been advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight information, as some delays or operational adjustments may occur during the temporary closure.
The airport emphasized that the decision was made out of an abundance of caution and that the runway closure is a preventive measure while engineers evaluate the affected area.
On May 21, the airport shut down a runway after crews discovered a sinkhole during a routine inspection.
