New York City officials are warning residents and visitors to prepare for a period of heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible flash flooding as a powerful weather system moves across the region on Monday, June 22, and into Tuesday, June 23.

According to New York City Emergency Management, rain is expected to develop late Monday morning before becoming moderate to heavy during the afternoon. Forecasters are also warning of thunderstorms between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., followed by another round of stormy weather late Monday night and into early Tuesday.

Rainfall totals of 0.75 to 2 inches are expected across much of the city, with some locations receiving up to 4 inches. The heaviest storms may produce rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, increasing the risk of localized flash flooding and travel disruptions.

The weather alert comes on a particularly busy day for the city. Monday has been designated a Gridlock Alert Day as thousands of football fans are expected to travel to the Senegal versus Norway FIFA World Cup match scheduled for 8 p.m. at NYNJ Stadium. City officials are urging travelers to allow extra time for their journeys and to use public transportation whenever possible.

To prepare for the potential impacts, NYC Emergency Management has activated its Emergency Operations Center and increased staffing levels at its 24-hour Watch Command. The city has also activated its Flash Flood Emergency Plan and is coordinating with the National Weather Service, utility companies, transportation agencies and FIFA event organizers.

Winds from the southeast are expected to reach 10 to 15 mph, with gusts of up to 30 mph. Stronger thunderstorms could produce isolated wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph, raising the possibility of downed trees and scattered power outages.

City agencies have already begun clearing storm drains and catch basins in an effort to reduce flooding risks. Emergency crews and tow truck task forces have also been placed on standby.

Officials are reminding residents never to walk or drive through flooded streets and to avoid entering flooded basements. People are encouraged to keep mobile phones charged, secure loose outdoor items and check on elderly neighbors and those with health conditions who may need assistance.

A moderate rip current risk is also expected at area beaches, creating potentially dangerous swimming conditions.
