The United States Geological Survey reported early this morning (June 25, 2026) about a major disaster in Venezuela. Two powerful earthquakes struck the capital, Caracas. The first quake felt had a magnitude of 7.2, while the second had a magnitude of 7.5.
According to reports coming from the country, buildings have collapsed, extensive destruction is visible in the streets, and there are fears that thousands of people may have died there.
It is also reported that the airport in the capital Caracas has been closed to takeoffs and landings, following continued aftershocks and fears of further powerful tremors.
US President Donald Trump responded to the events on social media, calling the incident "shocking."
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a special message in which she wrote: "We are with the people of Venezuela. I recently ordered the preparation of the necessary assistance. For now, they have asked us for support with specialized personnel in rescue and health."
According to the National Weather Service in the US, "the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a Tsunami Advisory for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands."
