After Athens Airport, which was the first in Europe to switch to 100% alternative energy, and Istanbul Airport, which underwent a similar move, Dalaman Airport in southwestern Turkey is introducing the world's first terminal powered entirely by solar energy, produced from its own roof.
An ambitious two-phase project led by international infrastructure company Ferrovial, the system generates over 20,000 megawatt-hours of green electricity per year, enabling the terminal to meet 100% of its electricity needs independently.
In addition to energy savings, the move is expected to reduce approximately 8,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, an amount equivalent to the environmental impact of approximately 380,000 trees.
Beyond electricity generation, the solar panels also serve as a smart engineering solution: they create natural shading on the glass facades and reduce heat loads, which reduces the need for cooling and improves operational efficiency in the region's hot climate.
According to the infrastructure company's announcement, the project sets a new standard for the aviation industry and demonstrates how it is possible to combine growth in passenger traffic with deep environmental responsibility.
