The Malaysian government announced that it has extended the agreement with Ocean Infinity for another year, in order to continue the search for the remains of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 , which disappeared in March 2014 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
Malaysia's Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, said that the agreement has been extended from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. According to him, all the original terms of the contract have been maintained, primarily the "No Find, No Fee" principle, meaning that the company will not receive any payment if it fails to locate the remains of the plane.
If the wreckage is successfully located, Malaysia will pay Ocean Infinity $70 million. The original agreement was signed in March 2025 for a period of one year, during which the company conducted a two-phase search in a large area of the southern Indian Ocean.
According to the Malaysian Ministry of Transport, approximately 7,500 square kilometers of the seabed were scanned during the operation, but an area of approximately 7,428 square kilometers still remained unexamined. The extension of the agreement is intended to allow for the completion of the scan in the remaining area.
Locke explained that Ocean Infinity had to temporarily divert its main vessels and equipment to other commercial missions, so the search will continue between November 2026 and April 2027, the period when sea conditions in the southern Indian Ocean are considered more favorable and safe for this type of activity.
According to the minister, the decision to extend the agreement reflects the Malaysian government's ongoing commitment to bringing an end to one of the greatest mysteries in modern aviation history and providing answers to the families of the passengers and crew, who have been waiting for more than 12 years to know what happened to their loved ones.
The disappearance of flight MH370 continues to be considered one of the most mysterious and complex cases in the world of aviation, and the renewed search may be the last chance to try and solve the mystery.
