A young tourist has died following an incident at the swimming pool of Grand Hotel degli Angeli in Italy, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

In a statement released after the tragedy, the hotel expressed its "deepest condolences" to the victim's family and said its management and staff were thinking of the young man's loved ones during what it described as a moment of "immense pain."

The hotel also sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, stating that the swimming pool was closed to the public and not accessible to guests at the time because it was outside its scheduled opening hours.

According to the property, it immediately handed over surveillance footage to investigators. The hotel said the CCTV recordings show the young man carrying out what it described as "a voluntary gesture or a stunt" that proved fatal.

Out of respect for the victim's family and the ongoing investigation, the hotel said it would not issue any further statements. It also confirmed that the property remains open and continues to welcome guests.

Authorities have not yet announced the results of their investigation or released additional details about the circumstances of the incident.

UK Reminds Travelers About Swimming Safety in Italy

The tragedy comes as the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) reminds travelers that drownings occur every year in Italy's swimming pools, lakes and coastal waters.

The FCDO advises visitors to supervise children closely around water, even where lifeguards are present, and warns against diving into unfamiliar water because hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious or fatal injuries.

Beachgoers are also encouraged to follow local warning flags, avoid swimming where red flags are displayed and take extra care around strong currents, particularly near river mouths. Those swimming in lakes should be aware of the risks posed by cold water shock, which can affect even experienced swimmers.

The travel advice forms part of the FCDO's general guidance for people visiting Italy during the busy summer travel season.

As a reminder, yesterday, July 7, a tourist suffered a head injury after falling near Santa Maria Cave in Malta.
