The United States Embassy in Bangkok issued an official warning last night (Thursday, July 9) to US citizens traveling to Thailand, following a significant tightening of the country's customs enforcement regarding cannabis.
According to the announcement, effective June 17, 2026, Thailand will classify cannabis flowers as an offense under the country's Customs Act. This means that anyone caught importing, exporting, or attempting to circumvent cannabis restrictions could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to 500,000 baht, or both.
The US Embassy emphasized that although Thailand decriminalized cannabis possession in 2022, importing or exporting cannabis without the appropriate permits is still prohibited by law.
As part of the warning, passengers were told to check local laws before traveling, not pack cannabis products in carry-on luggage or suitcase on international flights, and avoid carrying luggage or packages for other people.
Travelers are also advised to carry prescription medications in their original packaging and with appropriate documents attached.
The US Embassy also reminds that American citizens are subject to Thai law while in the country, and that the US government cannot guarantee their release in the event of arrest or criminal proceedings.
