The annual tradition highlights one of the hospitality industry's most recognizable welcome gestures: the complimentary DoubleTree chocolate chip cookie handed to guests at check-in.

This year, however, the hotel brand is also shining a spotlight on a surprising detail that many fans still don't know about its iconic recipe.

The secret ingredient? Lemon juice.

According to DoubleTree by Hilton, just a quarter teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice is added to the dough, helping create the cookie's distinctive flavor and texture. The unexpected addition remained a closely guarded secret for decades before the company publicly released the official recipe in 2020.

Alongside traditional ingredients such as butter, brown sugar, oats, walnuts, and generous amounts of chocolate chips, the citrus element quickly became one of the recipe's most talked-about features among home bakers.

"Guests are always intrigued when they learn freshly squeezed lemon juice is part of the DoubleTree by Hilton chocolate chip cookie recipe," said Drew Iddings, Global Brand Leader for DoubleTree by Hilton.

"It's a small ingredient, but it's become one of the most talked-about details when we unveiled the recipe behind the famous cookie that has welcomed guests for decades."

The DoubleTree cookie has become an integral part of the brand's identity since it was first introduced, with millions of cookies served annually at hotels worldwide. For many travelers, receiving the warm treat has become as memorable as the stay itself.

To mark National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day on August 4, DoubleTree is inviting both travelers and local residents to stop by any participating U.S. hotel to pick up a complimentary cookie, regardless of whether they have a booking.

The initiative offers a rare opportunity for cookie enthusiasts to experience the famous welcome without checking into a room.

While the recipe is now publicly available, DoubleTree says the combination of ingredients, including the unexpected splash of lemon juice, continues to surprise even longtime fans.

Whether you're arriving after a long flight, taking a road trip, or simply curious about one of hospitality's best-known sweet treats, August 4 may be the perfect day to find out what all the fuss is about.
