Copenhagen. Photo: Shutterstock Copenhagen Airport had a particularly busy July, with 3.45 million passengers passing through. This is an increase of 3.6% compared to July last year.
The holiday season led to a wave of departures by residents of Denmark and southern Sweden, alongside a continued increase in the number of international visitors arriving in the country.
Photo: ShutterstockSpain was the most popular destination during the month, with around 294,000 passengers flying between Copenhagen and 12 destinations in the country, including Malaga, Mallorca and Barcelona. Italy ranked second and showed the most impressive growth rate, an 11% increase in passenger numbers compared to last year, with around 263,000 passengers.
Greece, Turkey and France also maintained their place among the favorite summer destinations, and in total about 1.1 million passengers flew between Copenhagen and these five Mediterranean countries - almost a third of all passengers in July.
Copenhagen notes that, as Danes go on vacation, there is also an increase in the number of tourists from southern Europe choosing to visit Denmark, thanks in part to the mild summer weather and the "Coolcation" phenomenon, which encourages vacations in cooler destinations. According to data from the Danish authorities, the number of overnight stays by visitors from Spain, Italy, France and Greece continues to rise this year.
