Thailand. Photo: Shutterstock Thailand has officially welcomed a new air connection with Indonesia after TransNusa Airlines launched its inaugural direct service between Jakarta and Bangkok, further strengthening tourism and business links between two of Southeast Asia's largest travel markets.
The first TransNusa flight, 8B381, landed at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport carrying a full load of 174 passengers, highlighting strong demand for the new route from day one. Among those onboard was Indonesia's Ambassador to Thailand, Hari Prabowo, who joined airline executives and Thai tourism officials for the inaugural celebration.
The new service will operate twice daily, offering 14 weekly flights aboard a 174-seat Airbus A320-200. The schedule provides approximately 2,500 inbound seats each week, translating to more than 130,000 seats annually between the Indonesian and Thai capitals.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the new route supports the country's strategy of expanding regional air connectivity while making travel across Southeast Asia easier and more convenient.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said the additional flights align with the Thai Government's "Ease of Travelling" policy and are expected to attract more high-quality visitors from Indonesia, particularly independent travelers, Muslim families, and younger tourists seeking cultural, culinary, wellness, and beach experiences.
The Jakarta-Bangkok connection also strengthens access between two important regional hubs, making it easier for Indonesian travelers to explore Thailand's diverse destinations.
The launch follows the signing of separate Memorandums of Understanding between TAT, TransNusa Airlines, and travel platform Traveloka on August 4. The agreements focus on destination marketing, travel product development, and expanding air connectivity between the two countries.
As part of the partnership, TransNusa also plans to launch a direct Bali–Phuket route later in 2026, further expanding travel options between Indonesia and Thailand. Joint marketing campaigns and public relations initiatives are expected to support both routes and increase awareness among Indonesian travelers.
Indonesia continues to be an important source market for Thailand. Between January 1 and August 2, 2026, the country welcomed 378,881 Indonesian visitors.

Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chon Buri, and Songkhla ranked among the most popular destinations, while visitors were particularly drawn to Thai cuisine, cultural attractions, spa and wellness experiences, community-based tourism, and the country's renowned beaches.
The successful launch of the Jakarta-Bangkok route represents another step in Thailand's efforts to strengthen regional tourism recovery while offering travelers more convenient flight options across Southeast Asia.
